Emerging from the Black Canyon Road from Ramona, the Santa Ysabel Creek Trail moves high above the Santa Ysabel Creek. This is a good trail for 2WD’s and for hiking as well. Those driving should do so in good weather. Hikers can start from the vehicle trail and move along the Black Canyon Creek. This creek has water all year around and there are several spots where you can take a much needed break under the shade of the large oak trees.
Vehicles can move one at a time along this trial and there are many passing places. If you choose to do this route on horseback, move northwards toward the Black Mountain.
If you prefer to drive a 4WD then you can attempt the old Black Mountain Truck Trail. Here is where you will encounter rough, uneven rocky areas which can make the ride bumpy. After about 3 miles on, you cannot take your vehicle any further. Take the option of hiking, horse riding or use the mountain bikes right up to the top of the peak.
Head back to the main trail and it gradually slopes downwards to Lusardi Pamo Road. You can reach Ramona 6 miles from here.
Requirements
Check with the ranger station at Ramona if the trail is open especially during the rains. Ensure that you obtain a National Forest Adventure pass as well. Camping is not permitted along this trail.
