Penny Pines
From Dirtopia, The Off-Road Encyclopedia
Penny Pines Staging Area of Elk Mountain OHV Area in Lake County.
Penny Pines is the upper staging location/camp of the area generally referred to as Elk Mountain which is part of the Mendocino National Forest. The lower staging area is known as Middle Creek. The two staging areas are far enough apart that they can almost be considered separate riding areas. Some people also refer to the Elk Mountain area loosely as CC Camp; the origin of that reference is not clear, though more often riders seem to reference one of the two main staging areas -- Middle Creek or Penny Pines.
Penny Pines provides easy access to the trails on the upper part of Elk Mountain. There are generally fewer young riders and it can be significantly colder at the top. Snow is not uncommon. There are a few camping spots but camping is better at Middle Creek. There are dry toilet facilities but little else.
Some people ride the Mendocino OHV Corridor from Penny Pines to Stonyford. The Ranger station has all maps to include Stonyford/Lake Pillsbury/Cow Mountain/Elk Mountain.
Subject to rain closure. Snow in winter. (707) 275-2361
