Jump to: navigation, search

The Daniel Boone National Forest is the only national park to be contained entirely within the borders of the state of Kentucky. It has an area of about 706,000 acres and contains a large number of unmaintained roads which are legal for use by street legal vehicals.

Location

The forest covers parts of 16 counties in eastern Kentucky. They are listed here in descending order of Forest Service land area.

McCreary County Laurel County Rowan County Jackson County Menifee County Whitley County Pulaski County Bath County Rockcastle County Wolfe County Powell County Morgan County Lee County Estill County Owsley County Wayne County

The proclaimation area of the park can be seen in this map view as the green shaded area. Keep in mind that this is the proclaimation area only and private land will be interspersed in this area.

Status

Since laws are poorly enforced and understood even by forest service personel it is generally a good idea to follow rules posted in the specific location you will be riding or in absence of these to consult with someone farmilar with the area (as well as following general princibles of responsible OHV use). Generally there are many unmaintained roads which should be open to any vehical meeting the requirments to drive on any Kentucky road. ATVs and dirtbikes are not technically legal in most areas (as most "trails" are technically considered public roads) however forest service personel will generally not cite you unless you are off trail or not wearing required safety gear.
