Class 6 Roads

From Dirtopia, The Off-Road Encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Parts of Class 6 Roads are maintained by local ATV/Snowmobile club-some bypasses are restricted-so regular vehicles should stay on the trail to avoid damage. Couple of real good muddy water pools-seems that a few wimps can't stop digging them out but it fills up again. Stock 4wd with care can make the whole run- slightly modified can have real fun. We've seen local kids in street cars make it-damaged, but they don't drive with brains.

A side trail off Cathole now connects to Cornish Turnpike, which has several access points from Newport and Cornish-by making a large figure 8 you can do about 25-30 miles (so far) and also enjoy a picnic at a large pond totally isolated from anyone without a 4 wheeler.

The best 'chasms' on this trail unfortunately had new sturdy bridges put in by the clubs-not just for ATV's but heavy enough to handle fire and rescue vehicles I guess-to keep the roads from being totally chained off. Both Cathole and Cornish Turnpike are restricted in the winter to snowmobiles and ATVs, and NO motorized vehicles by STATE LAW allowed until May (end of Mud season) although rumor has it that the date moved to earlier in the year. Of course, if the mud season is short and it dries up....no one patrols the offenders. Neither of these trails is anything a 'rock crawler' would be interested in...there are a few extreme ledge areas off the Powerline that bisects the trails-I suppose if you wanted to play there you could but I've seen no sign of any rigs like that. There is no water crossing on this trail-standing water in the 'puddles' can get to 2' deep at times and ATV's have made multiple bypasses off the main trail. There are no laws about driving through standing water-only through active waterways. I was present when one of the local police patrols was winching his ATV out of a puddle that was too deep for him. As of October, 2007, several of the side trails have been shut off by the new landowner (Blue Mountain Preserve aka Corbin Park Association. They are buying up all available land outside their compound to prevent developement-and wherever trail abuse has been outrageous they are shutting down those trails. Most of the 'side trails' are maintained and kept open by permission with the landowners with the ATV club but the Class 6 road is under state jurisdiction although some of the more 'righteous' ATV'rs think they control it. Keep speed down, don't go off trail, and pull to the side to let the smaller rigs through and everyone will co-exist happily.

Directions

Cornish Turnpike is Closed to ALL motorized vehicles from March 1 to July 1. The side trails off Cat Hole with the new bridges are privately owned, which you need to have written permission from the Landowner to use and is for ATV/Snowmobile use ONLY, NO 4 x 4's allowed. There is also up to a $10,000.00 fine for driving in the water in NH. Area Police Departments and Fish and Game ARE patrolling this area, so take note and don't spoil it for those of us that put in hundreds of hours maintaining this road and these trails.

Police Departments and Fish and Game ARE patrolling this area all the time,I would avoid this trail as a car can drive the whole thing, theres nothing to see and you built up 4x4 guys would be bored and still get a ticket.
