The lower portion of the trail is marked as Forest Service road 116, then 710.1. It begins between private land holdings. There are a number of steep sections with loose dirt and rocks and some areas of rocks. In about three miles the trail will cross Cascade Creek and split. The right route, Forest Service road 712.2B, will pass the Molly Bawn mine and join the Larmatine-Saxon trail, Forest Service road 712.1, in about 1.7 miles.

The left route, Forest Service road 710.1, continues uphill in the Cascade Creek valley. For the next 0.7 miles this route alternates between fairly gentle sections and steep areas with loose rocks and dirt. Here, Forest Service road 710.1 braches right to the Larmatine-Saxon trail. Continue straight along Forest Service road 710.1A. In about 0.8 miles, FS 710.1B branches to the right toward Woodchuck Mountain.

After another 1/5 mile the trail splits. The left fork appears more used, but now ends in about a 1/4 mile in numerous brush-piled earthen mounds under the power lines on Griffith Mountain. The right fork continues a few hundred feet to an old mine site overlooking Georgetown.

When you get to the end you will be on Ute Creek (easy trail). You can turn right to go back to Highway 103 or turn left to go up the mountain to Spring Creek (difficult), Saxon Mountain (moderate), Spring Gulch (easy), and Trail Creek (easy). See the map and additional trail information on this site for details about these trails and roads.

This is a great trail to run in the winter, but the snow gets fairly deep. If you are on the trail in snow, be sure you have a winch, and don't go alone.
