The Canadian River off-road area is in between Amarillo, TX and Dumas, TX on US 87/287. There's something there for everyone, ranging from novice to experienced wheelers. The area has trails on the west side of the highway and the east side of the highway, extending into the Rosita Flats OHV area of the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. The primary trail runs east from the highway into Rosita Flats.
The west side has a wide open sandy area along with access to several hill climb and rock crawling areas. Access to some portions requires water and / or mud hole crossings. Most of the time this is not an issue, however be aware of your vehicles capabilities and take note of large amounts of rainfall.
The east side has more trail riding areas with several hill climb and rock crawling areas right off of the main trail. The main trail runs about 5 miles into the area. Many visitors who camp do so on the east side.
Most obstacles have a bypass, so even stock four wheel drive vehicles can enjoy the area. You could easily spend five or six hours out here hitting various obstacles. Full size vehicles can run into width issues due to vegetation and brush growth (especially after periods of frequent rainfall).
Take US 87/287 north (about 18 miles from downtown). The entrance is on the right hand side just before the bridge.
Take US 87/287 south (about 29 miles from downtown). The entrance to the area is on the south side of the bridge, right after you cross over the river.
